A few weeks in Olympia with SGA Inspection School

When I started to see Home Inspection as a piece of the puzzle that would make Selkirk Country work I got really excited. The market isn’t overly saturated so there is an opportunity to picking up work quickly, and I’d really liked the idea of connecting with people, being a resource as they were looking to invest in a home.
Then I started to look into the licensing, and realized Washington State has the highest standards out of any other state in the country for home inspectors, even more so than California (where home inspection became an industry in the 70’s). It’s the only state that requires class room hours, you can’t do it online, so I was looking at 160 hours in 3 weeks in Olympia.
It took a couple days to settle into a routine with the long class days, followed by my afternoon run around the capital campus, and then studying late into the night using wifi at Taco Time. It’s been a lot of years since I’ve been in the classroom but covering over a 1000 pages of specs and codes wasn’t as intimidating as I thought it might.
After completing the experience with SGA Home Inspection School I can’t imagine how you would be able to be truly qualified with an online course. There is a lot more that goes into being a good inspector that a test doesn’t prepare you for, and I’m grateful for the experience. Not only will I be a better inspector because of it, but it also made me a better General Contractor.
I still have a lot to learn, in our region I’m looking to get my certifications in both radon and log cabins, which will likely be future blog post. But next I look forward to getting out and connecting with other professionals in the industry, and getting involved in the community.
